CPAC Pool Update ( 07/03/2020 )

by Chastain Park Athletic Club, 2020-07-03T10:27:38.000-07:00July 03 2020, at 10:27 AM PDT

Unfortunately, our July 6th Opening Pool Day has been delayed and put on hold. We know it is surreal, since tomorrow is July 4th and we are usually together celebrating in the parade and at the pool.

CPAC continues to coordinate with the City of Atlanta’s Parks Department and Pandemic Team, as well as have been collaborating with our fellow Atlanta public/private partnership pools in Garden Hills and Piedmont Park. Since our last correspondence, we submitted a robust swim schedule inclusive of transition and disinfecting breaks throughout the day.

However, there is a heightened concern at City Hall about an increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations rates. They have decided to take a cautious approach and outdoor pools are on a week to week review regarding Opening Day. BTW, the hospitalization rate increases are not just related to COVID-19, but other activity.

Moreover, Atlanta is reported to have the lion’s share of cases in Fulton County, but as best we can tell it has been getting better over the last seven days after an uptick. Also, there seems to be a lag in the data and they track backwards on 7 day trailing averages, so hopefully in another week it will be deemed safer and our leaders will be comfortable again about fully reopening the pools.

All of this is outside our control, but the glass is half-full, since we are being allowed to continue serving our swim teams under our CPAC COVID-19 guidelines. Also, the City is currently considering a request to give us the option to provide lap swimming by reservation outside of swim team in the interim. As you know, we have 20 swimming lanes set up and we hope to hear something early next week.

Thanks again for your patience and ongoing support.

We wish everyone a SAFE and Happy 4th of July!
